Wenshu Temple

Wenshu Temple is a renowned Buddhist monastery in western Sichuan and one of the best-preserved ancient temples within Chengdu city, located at No. 66 Wenshu Temple Street, Qingyang District, Chengdu. The temple was originally established during the Dàyè period of the Sui Dynasty, having undergone numerous cycles of destruction and reconstruction. The current buildings mainly date back to the Kangxi era. It was named after the worship of Manjusri Bodhisattva. Surrounded by red walls and shaded by ancient trees, five major halls are arranged sequentially along the central axis, creating a solemn and tranquil atmosphere. The temple houses precious cultural relics—the "Two Sacred Treasures of Konglin" (a tooth carving of Emperor Jianwen of Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yunwen, and a collection of banyan leaf scriptures), as well as the Thousand-Buddha Peace Pagoda. The scripture pavilion also features exhibitions related to the relic of Master Xuanzang's skull. Wenshu Temple is not only a sacred place for worship and prayer but also a rare oasis of Zen tranquility amidst the bustling city. Admission is free. Visitors can collect incense at the main gate. Nearby, the Wenshu Fang district features Sichuan opera performances, teahouses, and traditional local snacks—making it an ideal destination to experience Chengdu’s "slow lifestyle."
