Songpan Ancient City

Located at the strategic passageway to Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, Songpan Ancient City is a highland border town with over 1,400 years of history. Founded during the Tang Dynasty, the existing city walls were constructed in the Ming Dynasty using blue bricks, with a circumference of 6.2 kilometers, majestic in scale and one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the northwestern Sichuan region. The city's layout is square and orderly, with imposing city gate towers; Princess Wencheng, who married into Tibet during the Tang-Tibetan alliance, once entered Tibet through this gateway. The ancient city walls, gates, and old alleyways harmonize beautifully with the surrounding snow-capped mountains and meadows, making it an essential stop for experiencing frontier history and Tibetan-Qiang culture.
